The opening session was chaired by the Atatürk Research Center. In his lecture entitled “From the Existing to the Desirable: Centenary of the Civil Code,” Professor Gökhan Antalya discussed in detail the process from the Mecelle to the Turkish Civil Code, and in particular assessed the adoption processes and practical implications of Turkish Civil Code No. 4721. Antalya also shared his valuable experience from the commissions for the Civil Code and Turkish law of obligations, making important observations on this process.

In his lecture entitled "Developments in Civil Law from the Opening of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to the Adoption of the Turkish Civil Code (The Traces of the Civil Code)," Professor Murat Topuz comprehensively examined the legal transformation from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic. Topuz emphasized Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's crucial role in this legal revolution and described the adoption of the Civil Code as one of the Republic's greatest revolutions.

At the conclusion of the program, the university and the Atatürk Research Center exchanged gifts, certificates of participation, and letters of thanks.

Entrepreneur and inventor Leif Lundblad (1938–2025) has bequeathed SEK 538 million to Karolinska Institutet.

Karolinska Institutet:

It is a historic day for Karolinska Institutet. Entrepreneur and inventor Leif Lundblad (1938–2025) has bequeathed SEK 538 million to Karolinska Institutet, the largest donation ever to have been made to a Swedish university in modern times. Much of the sum will go towards research on dementia diseases. Leif Lundblad passed away in October 2025 at the age of 87.

He was known as the father of the bank-note dispenser found in ATMs, an invention that revolutionised cash handling and bank services around the world. Over the years, he helped finance many research projects at KI in such fields as pain, Alzheimer’s disease, COVID-19 and AI.

In his testament, he has bequeathed the unprecedented sum of SEK 538 million, primarily for research into neurodegenerative (dementia) diseases, of which Alzheimer’s disease is the most common.

The donation is also to go towards research on diseases with a major impact on public health, including chronic pain and autoimmune diseases.

“It’s an incredibly generous gift that Leif Lundblad has made to Karolinska Institutet and we are exceedingly grateful for his intention and commitment,” says KI president Annika Östman Wernerson. “The donation will be of enormous benefit to research into dementia and other diseases that affect large sections of society.”

Leif Lundblad was a philanthropist and it was his curiosity as an inventor that drew him to medical research. He was made an honorary doctor at Karolinska Institutet in 2025.

“My father had a genuine interest in innovative scientific ideas and the problems they could solve,” says daughter Ulrika Lundblad. “The enthusiasm he felt when meeting researchers at Karolinska Institutet was palpable. By virtue of this donation, we, his family, are very much looking forward to following and being part of future breakthroughs.”

Aims of the research being done in this field include improving methods of early diagnosis, developing novel treatments and increasing knowledge of the diseases’ underlying mechanisms.

“This is the largest donation to have been made to a Swedish university in modern times,” says head of the Development Office Jenny Löhr, who works with donor relations at KI. “We’re seeing a growing interest in philanthropy in Sweden, and more and more people seeking to get involved in helping to solve the world’s greatest health challenges. Leif Lundblad’s generosity will enable innovative projects and make a profound impact on Swedish dementia research.”

Of the 538 million kronor donation, 500 million will go towards research funding, awarded annually on a competitive basis to KI researchers; 30 million will go towards a professorship; and 8 million will go towards KI’s Prize for Innovation and Utilisation.

Caption: Ulrika Lundblad and Leif Lundblad. Many researchers at KI have heard Leif Lundblad say, “I want to solve the mystery of Alzheimer’s.” Thanks to a historic donation, the research can now take that ambition a step further.

Dr. Michael F. Feldkamp:

Johan Ickx's book is a sensation! It is now available in twelve languages, and further translations are in preparation.

Ickx refutes the misconceptions that have been entrenched in the minds of many people for six decades: that Pius XII was a vassal of Hitler who was not interested in the fate of the Jews.

The director of the Historical Archives of the Vatican Secretariat of State exclusively presents previously unknown documents that cast Pius XII in a completely different light. During the Second World War, the Vatican conscientiously responded to the numerous requests for help from Jews throughout Europe that reached the Pope.

The Vatican was the only state in the world to establish its own office for the rescue of Jews, where every plea for help and every report of Jewish deportations and extermination camps was meticulously investigated. Documents from the Vatican archives, only made public in 2020, attest to the Pope's numerous protests to the diplomatic missions of the affected states, his interventions with the responsible ministers, and his complaints to the heads of government.

Based on historical material, Ickx offers us a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of the Vatican, one that will change our understanding of Pope Pius XII.

The book is now available in bookstores and from all major online retailers.

New book "Germany is sick" by Prof. Dr. Ingo Froböse

In this book, Stefan Sauerzapf and Ingo Froböse not only explain how our system has become entangled in coping with illness, but also point the way to healthy living conditions in which people have the chance to become managers of their own health.

Prof. Dr. Ingo Froböse:

Today, our new book "Germany is Sick" is released by ECON, an imprint of Ullstein Buchverlage GmbH, and unfortunately, there's some fitting news to go with it: a new record high in mental illness among young people, therapists demonstrating against fee cuts, pharmacists demanding fee increases, and doctors threatening to cancel appointments if they are affected by further austerity measures. It sounds like panic – and all because Federal Health Minister Nina Warken will be announcing the new multi-billion-euro deficits of the statutory health insurance funds for 2027 next Monday.

We already spend over half a trillion euros annually on the most expensive healthcare system in Europe. Given the expected explosion in the number of chronic diseases and the aging population, forecasts for 2040 are approaching the one trillion euro mark. This will no longer be sustainable, and austerity measures will not help.

In our book, Stefan Sauerzapf and I not only explain how our system has become entangled in managing illness, but we also point the way to healthy living conditions in which people have the opportunity to become managers of their own health. This requires more than just minor reforms; we need a shift towards a healthcare system that truly deserves the name.

We outline the steps to achieve this in our 10-point plan for the system, which we developed in our joint think tank, Fish in Water. All ten points and concrete approaches for their improvement can be found here: fischimwasser.de/buch

And we would like to thank our guest authors once again for their exciting contributions, which have enriched our book!

Today, the awards ceremony for this year's state competition "Jugend forscht junior" took place at the University of Kassel.

Universität Kassel:

Congratulations on winning the main prize at "Jugend forscht junior"!

Today, the awards ceremony for this year's state competition "Jugend forscht junior" took place at the University of Kassel. The main prize for the "best creative work" as well as the first prize in the discipline of technology was awarded to Liang Künzler (13) from Jugend forscht MakerLab, Schuldorf Bergstraße, in Seeheim - Jugenheim for his aircraft concept for hydrogen production from solar energy (photo 1 and 2).

In this project, he designed an aircraft that autonomously ascends into the stratosphere and, at an altitude of 15,000 meters, uses solar energy to produce hydrogen and store it in pressurized tanks. In his model, several aircraft are accompanied by a tanker ship, which delivers the hydrogen there, much like bees delivering nectar.

The prize for the "Best Creative Work" was endowed by the Hessian Ministry of Culture, Education and Opportunities and presented by State Minister Armin Schwarz.

Kassel's Mayor, Dr. Sven Schoeller, was also present today to view the projects on site. (Photo 1, from left to right: Dr. Sven Schoeller, Liang Künzler, Armin Schwarz)

Liam Alexander Lang (14) and Klara von Hauff (12) won the state competition in the "Working World" category for their project "NeuroPong: Brainwave-Controlled Gaming to Overcome Barriers". (Photo 3)

President Anders Overgaard Bjarklev:

Congratulations to Paul van der Laan on winning the Kalundborg Refinery Prize 2026!

The Kalundborg Refinery Prize is Denmark's oldest technology prize. Since 1950, it has recognized and supported outstanding researchers for their excellent technical and scientific achievements – research that has an impact and benefits society.

Paul van der Laan is a good example of this. As a senior scientist at DTU – Technical University of Denmark – he specializes in research on wind energy and wind farms at the interface of aerodynamics, atmospheric physics and numerical modeling, thus contributing to more efficient and sustainable energy solutions.

Excellent research is the foundation for our sustainable future, competitiveness, and technological autonomy.

Congratulations!

The edited volume Artificial Intelligence Law and Digitalisation in Law

Doç. Dr. Sinan OKUR:

After a long and demanding preparation process, the edited volume Artificial Intelligence Law and Digitalisation in Law has been published by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA).

The book brings together leading scholars examining the relationship between artificial intelligence and law from different perspectives. As Heidegger observed in Being and Time, the level of a science becomes visible when its fundamental concepts enter into crisis. Whether artificial intelligence will ultimately generate such a crisis for law remains an open question—one that legal scholarship will continue to explore in the years to come.

I would like to sincerely thank all contributing authors for their valuable chapters and intellectual contributions.

Contents

Preface – Sinan Okur

-When the Curriculum Vitae Meets the Algorithm – Alison Lui Dr. Alison Lui

-The Use of AI Systems within the Context of the Offence of Conducting Statistical Analysis Based on the Identity of Judges under French Law – Mustafa Akgün Mustafa Akgun

-The Liability Maze in AI-Generated Intellectual Property Violations – Muhammed Furkan Akıncı

-Product Liability Insurance: New Paths for Software and Systems of Artificial Intelligence Following Directive (EU) 2024/2853 – Helmut Heiss Helmut Heiss

“Congratulations to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) on successfully defending its title as a University of Excellence,” said Martin Keller.

Martin Keller:

Congratulations to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) on successfully defending its title as a University of Excellence!

I was therefore all the more pleased to be able to visit KIT this week as part of my Center Tour through the Helmholtz Association.

KIT occupies a unique position within the German science system. As a university within the Helmholtz Association, it combines research and teaching with extensive research infrastructures – a combination that is immediately apparent upon visiting.

This was also evident in the stops on the tour: from the Karlsruhe research factory for AI-integrated production to the KATRIN experiment for determining the mass of neutrinos – very light and difficult-to-detect elementary particles – and the ZEISS Innovation Hub Karlsruhe, to discussions about accelerator technologies, fusion research and wearable health devices.

The exchange with the young talents and scientists on site was also particularly valuable – a regular and very important part of my center tour.

I am impressed by the diversity of topics and the integrative approach that connects different disciplines. You can feel that at KIT, scientific curiosity, development, and social responsibility go hand in hand – this makes KIT an important part of the Helmholtz Association.

Many thanks to the entire KIT team for the fascinating tour and the valuable insights. Here's to many more successes together!

Resetting role models: How can we ensure that teachers are less isolated and more actively involved in teams?

Resetting role models: How can we ensure that teachers are less isolated and more actively involved in teams? And how can schools be given more freedom in shaping their development – and how can they make even better use of the freedom they already have?

At the Future Forum for Learning Promotion, almost 120 experts from politics, administration, educational practice and business worked on these and many other questions at the Impact Hub Berlin. Here is the link to the now published conference report (with many pictures from the two days of the event): bewirken.org

“We want to move to a higher system level. To leave the old behind, to try new things – towards a professional profile in schools that can be far more diverse than we have known before,” says Björn Adam, co-founder of beWirken.

Another topic at the Future Forum: Teachers' working hours in Germany and the workshop project "Freiräume(n) – Arbeit an Schule andersorganisationen" by the Deutsche Telekom Foundation. Here are some practical tips: telekom-stiftung.de

And here's another important note: School principals and their teams can ask questions about the project and implementation ideas in the webinar "Meet the Experts" on Tuesday, March 17th, from 3 pm to 4 pm. Jacob Chammon and the school principals Lisanne Appel, Mario Mosbacher and Martin van de Linde are present.
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rupert Sausgruber:

Last night I had the honor of presenting a special award at the WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business): We awarded our former rector Christoph Badelt the WU's honorary plaque.

Christoph Badelt significantly shaped the development of WU Vienna for many years. During his tenure from 2002 to 2015, important decisions were made regarding the future direction of the university. This includes, in particular, the implementation of the 2002 University Act, which paved the way for institutional autonomy and the development of a modern management culture at the university. During this period, WU's international positioning was also advanced, the transition to the Bachelor's and Master's system was completed, and, last but not least, the current WU campus was realized. Many of the structures and strengths that characterize WU today can be traced back to this time.

"It was a particular pleasure for me to look back on this formative phase of our university history together with many companions and to thank Christoph Badelt for his work", said Rupert Sausgruber.

Prof. Dr. Eva-Lotta Brakemeier:

Prevention is not a marginal issue in health policy

It is one of the central questions for the future of our society.

Why do we still invest so much in restoring health – and so little in preventing it?

This question has occupied me intensely over the past few weeks.

Whether in the Science Council, the German Psychological Society (DGPs) e.V., at the University of Greifswald or in exchanges with partners from politics and society – it becomes clear time and again:

We need a real cultural shift: from repair medicine to prevention.

Some impressions from the last few weeks:

Science Council

In Hanover, we presented our WR contribution, "Prevention and Health Promotion in Science, Healthcare, and Society," which calls for precisely this change – towards a policy of general health. Health should not be solely the responsibility of the healthcare system, but must be considered in all political areas.

At the symposium, Sarah Stapel and I were also able to present our association “Together for Mental Health” for discussion – an example of how prevention can be implemented concretely at the regional level: through voluntary commitment, accompanying scientific research and the involvement of many committed individuals.

One Health

Prevention doesn't end with the individual. Healthy people can only exist on a healthy planet. This idea was impressively presented by Cornelia Betsch and Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen at the German Psychological Society's (DGP) parliamentary evening on the topic of climate protection. Karl Lauterbach emphasized that social stability, ecological foundations of life, and (mental) health are more closely linked than long assumed.

Mental Health Alliance

An impressive new alliance of stakeholders from science, healthcare, and civil society – under the dedicated leadership of Vanessa Gestettenbauer and many others.

Together, we pursue a clear goal: a system that empowers young people in particular before they become ill – and not just intervenes when treatment becomes necessary. Because we share a central insight: there is no health without mental health.

And Sunday evening in Hamburg:

Leon Windscheid's presentation impressively demonstrated the power of science communication. A whole room full of people – and evidence-based psychology, presented in an understandable, moving, and motivating way. In short: prevention in practice.

My conclusion

The window of opportunity for prevention is now open. It is crucial that we seize it – in politics, science, and society. Prevention is not a luxury. It is a fundamental prerequisite for a healthy, resilient, and sustainable society.

In your opinion, what would need to change for prevention to finally receive the importance it deserves?

Juristische Fakultät Hannover:

At the beginning of the current winter semester, we were pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. Philipp Ceesay, LL.M. (Harvard), as a new member of our faculty. He has since assumed the newly created Chair of Civil Law, Commercial and Corporate Law at Leibniz University Hannover.

For those who haven't yet met Mr. Ceesay in person or experienced his lectures, we've conducted an interview with him. In it, you'll learn, among other things, what motivated him to study law, why the baby boomer generation could, in the worst-case scenario, create a "worst-evidence problem" for their descendants, and how to pronounce the name Ceesay correctly.

You can find the interview on our website at the following link: jura.uni-hannover.de
