Press release from the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig:

During the public spring session, 19 scientists were admitted to the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig. In the ceremonial hall of the Old Town Hall in Leipzig, the Friedrich Weller Prize and the Wilhelm Ostwald Medal were awarded on April 10, 2026. Greetings were offered by the three ministries of science in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, and the keynote address was given by academy member Sanaz Mostaghim on the topic: "The Science of Decision-Making: Artificial Intelligence for a Better Life for All."

The opening remarks by Academy President Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Knölker and the welcoming addresses already contained compelling words in defense of academic freedom. The speakers included Prof. Dr. Heike Graßmann, State Secretary in the Saxon State Ministry for Science, Culture and Tourism; Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann, Minister for Science, Energy, Climate Protection and the Environment of the State of Saxony-Anhalt; and Prof. Dr. Steffen Teichert, State Secretary for Science and Culture in the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of the Free State of Thüringen. All three emphasized the high regard for the scientific work carried out at the Academy and for the transfer of scientific findings to the public.

According to a report by Vice President Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Huschner, several prizes were awarded. Prof. Dr. Frank Glorius and Prof. Dr. Helma Wennemers received the Wilhelm Ostwald Medal of the Academy. Prof. Dr. Jean-Marie Verpoorten and Dr. Aruna Gamage were awarded the Friedrich Weller Prize, which is jointly awarded by the Academy and the University of Leipzig.

The University of Virginia’s (UVA) Center for Public Safety and Justice (CPSJ) is pleased to invite proposals for the Howard and Carol Safir Foundation (HCSF) Public Safety Initiative. This initiative is designed to support forward-thinking innovation in public safety. We seek projects that address long-standing, current, or future public safety challenges and extend beyond traditional approaches and introduce new methods, strategies and solutions to some of the most pressing and complex challenges facing the field. Priority will be given to proposals that test, pilot, or refine innovative practices with strong potential to generate meaningful, measurable improvements in public safety outcomes.

The HCSF Public Safety Initiative plans to fund three innovative projects, called “Innovation Labs,” one in each of the following categories: (1) Urban Policing, (2) Drug Enforcement, and (3) Cross-Jurisdictional Collaboration. Each selected project will receive up to $50,000 over a two-year period and will culminate in a Public Safety Innovation Symposium hosted at UVA. At the symposium, awardees will share findings, insights, and tools with an audience of researchers, public safety leaders, and practitioners from across the country.

On the draft bill for a statutory health insurance contribution rate stabilization law, President of German Medical Association, Dr. Klaus Reinhardt, stated.

      <turbo:content>
Reinhardt: Serious reforms instead of Crowbar operations

Ahead of tomorrow's hearing on the draft bill for a statutory health insurance contribution rate stabilization law at the Federal Ministry of Health, the President of the German Medical Association, Dr. Klaus Reinhardt, stated:

"According to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the statutory health insurance contribution rate stabilization law planned by the federal government is one of the biggest social welfare reforms in our country. In fact, we are facing one of the most extensive cost-cutting measures for statutory health insurance in decades, with potentially far-reaching consequences for patient care, for those insured, and for employees in our healthcare system.

The fact that those involved are given only four days over a weekend to review and evaluate a law exceeding 150 pages, containing such fundamental cuts and changes, is all the more unacceptable. These deadlines are a heavy-handed approach and completely inappropriate in this context. While there is every understanding of the urgent need for action, speed must not take precedence over thoroughness in such an important undertaking.

Despite this exceptionally tight deadline, we have conducted a detailed initial assessment of the draft and will clearly present our positions in the further parliamentary process. A particularly egregious example is the omission of the full refinancing of health insurance contributions for recipients of basic income support from the draft. This demonstrates a lack of appreciation for the insured and those working in the healthcare sector, who must bear the burden of this solidarity measure through cost-cutting measures, fee reductions, and increased workloads. The complete assumption of these costs by the federal budget would not only be essential from a regulatory policy perspective, but would also reflect a properly understood concept of societal solidarity.

It is now crucial to have sufficient time to carefully analyze the consequences of all measures planned under the law for patient care and to assess their interactions with one another. This is also important in order to properly evaluate the impact of the law on ongoing or pending reform projects, such as the introduction of the primary care system, the reorganization of emergency care, and the implementation of hospital reform.

In the further parliamentary process, we will pay very close attention to whether those affected are honestly and seriously involved in the detailed design of the reform, or whether it becomes a mere parliamentary formality. The acceptance and support of the reform by the medical profession will depend significantly on this."

The award was presented during the opening event of the German Judges and Prosecutors’ Conference in Weimar.

Media release from The German Judges Association (DRB):

The German Judges Association (DRB) awarded its Human Rights Prize to Miguel Ángel Gálvez of Guatemala. The award was presented during the opening event of the German Judges and Prosecutors’ Conference in Weimar.

In his speech, DRB Chairman Achim Scholz emphasized the award's special significance: It honors individuals from the judiciary and legal professions who have dedicated themselves to upholding the principles of the rule of law "at the risk of their lives, health, or personal freedom, or by accepting serious personal disadvantages." Scholz noted that the international attention generated by the award ceremony also serves to protect the recipients in their home countries. Scholz added that freedom and democracy are not guaranteed, but they are worth fighting for.

By honoring Gálvez, the DRB recognizes a judge who has dedicated decades to combating corruption and impunity in Guatemala. Since taking office in 1999, Gálvez has played a central role in addressing serious human rights violations. As presiding judge of a criminal court that handled high-risk cases, he oversaw numerous complex trials involving organized crime and state corruption.

"Miguel Ángel Gálvez Aguilar is one of the most important symbols of justice in Guatemala," said Iván Velásquez Gómez, the former Colombian Minister of Defense and recipient of the 2012 DRB Human Rights Award, in his speech honoring this year's award winner. Gálvez embodies the fight against corruption and enjoys the respect and esteem of his people. Velásquez sees the award ceremony as a message of hope for a new beginning, symbolized by the return of exiled judges and the restoration of democracy and the rule of law. Referring to Guatemala as the land of eternal spring, Velásquez concluded with the wish, “May Guatemala blossom.”

Gálvez expressed his gratitude for the award, saying that it also sends a message to judges around the world: “The defense of an independent judiciary must be resolute and combative while always respecting the law.” He dedicated the prize to his colleagues in Guatemala and Central America who, like him, live in exile for defending judicial independence. Addressing his homeland, he said: "Guatemala does not need a judiciary that adapts to political circumstances. It needs an incorruptible, professionally competent judiciary that is deeply aware of the nation’s diversity."

Gálvez gained international recognition for his role in the legal investigation of crimes committed by former military dictator Efraín Ríos Montt. He played a pivotal role in laying the groundwork for the historic genocide trial that, in 2013, resulted in the first conviction of a former head of state in his own country.

Gálvez also set standards in the fight against corruption at the highest political levels. In the La Línea scandal, for example, he ordered the arrest of President Otto Pérez Molina and Vice President Roxana Baldetti in 2015. The investigation uncovered a widespread network of corruption and abuse of power.

However, Gálvez's commitment made him a target of massive repression. He was threatened, defamed, and subjected to political pressure. Despite international calls for his protection, Gálvez was forced to resign from office in 2022.

Professor Liam Barry of the DCU School of Electronic Engineering has received 1.7 million euros in funding through the Research Ireland Infrastructure Programme.

Media release from DCU Faculty of Engineering and Computing:

Congratulations to Professor Liam Barry from DCU's School of Electronic Engineering who has received €1.7 million in funding through the Research Ireland Infrastructure Programme. Prof Liam Barry will lead the development of a Full Spectrum Communications Test Bed.

Today’s internet relies on a mix of radio waves and fiber optics, but as our data demands soar, these networks are hitting a 'speed limit' and consuming massive amounts of energy.

This new facility will allow researchers to test how light and ultra-high-frequency waves can work together to enable our communication networks to carry more data, more reliably, while significantly cutting the carbon footprint across all network segments including the world's data centres.

Professor Deborah O'Connell from the DCU Faculty of Science and Health also received significant funding through the programme to establish a platform for Atomic Layer Etching.

Media release from Austrian Federal Ministry of Justice:

Do you know who all profits (with) from news on the net?

"More players than you would expect at first glance".

Search engines (e.g. Google or Yahoo) and social media operators (e.g. Facebook, Instagram or X) use Austrian press content to generate reach, clicks and advertising revenue. Domestic media companies deliver this content, but often receive little to no remuneration for the online use of their texts, photos and videos – even though they put in the amount of work that others benefit from.

A separate ancillary copyright is intended to ensure that platforms pay for this use of press content. Instead of appearing individually, however, it makes sense for the media to bundle their rights in order to be on an equal footing with large tech companies.

From February 2026, the collecting society VG Newsmedia will take on exactly this task: it will represent the rights of press publishers in Austria and ensure that the use of journalistic content on the Internet is fairly remunerated. In his keynote speech at the official presentation of VG Newsmedia at the Concordia Press Club, the Berlin lawyer Prof. Dr. Thomas Höppner emphasized that the work of VG Newsmedia will not be an easy undertaking in view of the market power of Internet giants. Membership of VG Newsmedia is open to all publishing houses in Austria.

Media release from Curtin Molecular and Life Sciences (MLS):

Containing invasive toad species is closer than ever

The Toad Containment Zone (TCZ) is a large-scale initiative aimed at preventing the mass invasion of cane toads into the Pilbara region of Western Australia. These toads are an extremely toxic, invasive species with nefarious consequences for native wildlife, such as the Yellow-spotted monitor and the Northern quoll (pictured).

In a collaborative effort involving traditional owners, rangers, pastoralists, and scientists from various institutions—including Curtin University and Deakin University—this project involves creating a “waterless barrier” between the Great Sandy Desert and the Indian Ocean, effectively preventing toads from spreading by removing their access to water points like cattle watering tanks and troughs.

This initiative brings a hopeful approach to stopping the invasive species from marching into the Pilbara region, with the zone aiming to protect over 27 million hectares of habitat and significant Aboriginal cultural heritage from ecological damage.

Since 1 April 2026, IPP Director Prof. Dr Tim Happel has held the newly created Chair of Plasma Dynamics at TUM.

Media release from Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik - IPP:

Congratulations to Tim Happel on his appointment as Professor at the Technical University of Munich.

Since 1 April 2026, IPP Director Prof. Dr Tim Happel has held the newly created Chair of Plasma Dynamics at TUM. The appointment further strengthens the long-standing collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics and TUM in fusion research.

At IPP in Garching, Tim Happel heads the Plasma Dynamics Division. His work focuses on small-scale dynamic processes in plasma that often determine large-scale parameters such as efficiency and material load.

Understanding these processes is essential for assessing the feasibility and economic viability of future fusion reactors.

Six key legal institutions. Six women at the top.

In 2025, the Zurich legal system made a small piece of history: For the first time, six central institutions were simultaneously headed by women – the Justice and Home Affairs Directorate of the Canton of Zurich, the High Court of the Canton of Zurich, the Administrative Court of the Canton of Zurich, the Social Insurance Court of the Canton of Zurich, the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Zurich Bar Association.

In the short film “Democracy Talk – Focus on Law”, released yesterday for International Women’s Day, the six women discuss the role of their institutions with regard to the rule of law and democracy, and what motivates them to take on leadership roles.

Those portrayed in Sandra De Vito's film include government councilor Jacqueline Fehr and chief public prosecutor Susanne Leu.

On 7 March, law enforcement and police forces across the world will come together in remembrance, honouring the service and calling of police officers everywhere and paying tribute to the women and men who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

INTERPOL has invited its member countries to stand together in marking the international day of remembrance by illuminating their most significant national landmarks in blue, the INTERPOL blue of global policing.

National ceremonies on the day include moments of silence, the lowering of the flag, the laying of wreaths, and the reading of the names of fallen officers.

Across time zones and all continents, from small communities to global capitals, coordinated acts of remembrance are being held, including the illumination of iconic landmarks in INTERPOL blue...

Hundreds of buildings including police headquarters, government ministries, and notable civic structures are also being lit in blue across the world to mark the remembrance.

Across countries and continents, flags will fly at half-mast, and police forces will mark the day with commemorative events reflecting their traditions and cultures, united by a shared respect for duty, loss, and the commitment by police officers in keeping others safe.

The scientific team, which conducted research on the White Continent as part of the 10th National Antarctic Expedition under the patronage of the President, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Industry and Technology and coordinated by the TÜBİTAK Polar Research Institute, has returned home.

The expedition consisted of a team of 17 people in total, including 16 Turkish and 1 foreign researcher.

Fifteen research projects were carried out.

Significant research has been carried out in numerous fields, including climate change, polar ecosystems, geosciences and atmospheric sciences; and international partnerships have been developed within the framework of science diplomacy.

Maintenance work was carried out at the Turkish scientific research camp on Horseshoe Island; in addition, the nautical chart studies were continued.

Annual data were collected from the low-frequency (VLF) measurement station established jointly with the USA; long-term monitoring studies were carried out; and maintenance work was performed on the GNSS stations.

High school students who had won first place in the TEKNOFEST TÜBİTAK polar research project competition also participated in the expedition and had the opportunity to test their projects in Antarctica.
