Internationally Renowned Cancer and Stem Cell Researcher to Lead Bronx-Based NCI-Designated Center.

We are proud to announce that Ulrich Steidl, M.D., Ph.D., an international leader in blood cancer and stem cell research, has been named director of the Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) and vice president of cancer medicine at Montefiore Health System.
Dr. Steidl has served as interim director since late 2025 and previously held multiple leadership roles within MECCC, a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. Since joining Montefiore Einstein in 2008, he has built a distinguished career advancing our understanding of pre-leukemic stem cells and developing innovative approaches to cancer prevention and treatment.
His pioneering research has helped shape the concept of “precision prevention” and contributed to therapies now in clinical trials. An inventor on numerous patents and a co-founder of successful biotech startups, Dr. Steidl is also a dedicated mentor and collaborator. He has received numerous honors, including awards from the National Cancer Institute, Blood Cancer United, the International Society for Experimental Hematology (ISEH), and the V Foundation for Cancer Research, and is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
