Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg (UKHD)
Professor Julia Weinmann-Menke is the new Medical Director of the Department of Nephrology at UKHD.
She will assume the position of Medical Director of the Department of Nephrology at the Center for Internal Medicine of Heidelberg University Hospital – formerly the Heidelberg Kidney Center – on March 1, 2026. Prof. Weinmann-Menke succeeds Prof. Dr. Martin Zeier, who retired at the end of 2025.
At the same time, Julia Weinmann-Menke was appointed to the newly established W3 professorship for "Nephrology" at the Heidelberg Faculty of Medicine of Heidelberg University. At Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, she played a key role in developing the nephrology focus within the Department of Internal Medicine in recent years, most recently as co-director of the First Department of Internal Medicine. In addition to complex kidney diseases, her clinical and research focus includes transplantation medicine and the potential complications following kidney transplantation.
Furthermore, Professor Julia Weinmann-Menke plans to establish additional specialized nephrology outpatient clinics in Heidelberg, for example, for patients with glomerular kidney diseases, in whom the kidneys' filtering function is impaired. In this context, she considers it essential to maintain and intensify collaboration with local physicians in the region. "Nephrology patients typically have multiple conditions. They regularly visit their primary care physicians, who know them very well – it's important that we keep each other informed," says Professor Weinmann-Menke.
We wish Prof. Julia Weinmann-Menke a good start!
