According to the Central Institute for Statutory Health Insurance (ZI), psychotherapists generate a surplus of around 52 euros per working hour after deducting practice costs.

In its meeting on March 11, 2026, the Extended Assessment Committee decided, contrary to the votes of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV), to reduce the reimbursement for psychotherapeutic services by 4.5 percent, effective April 1, 2026. At the same time, the so-called structural supplement is to be increased by 14.25 percent. Overall, this means a reduction in fees of approximately 2.8 percent, even for psychotherapeutic practices that receive the full structural supplement. The health insurance funds had originally demanded significantly larger fee reductions.
