With the construction of a large AI computing center, the University of Lübeck is setting new standards for safe AI in medicine.

Construction of the AI computing center AnoMed will begin at the University of Lübeck in early March 2026. The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space is providing €29 million for the establishment of the computing center for artificial intelligence within the framework of two "AnoMed" projects.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has been supporting the University of Lübeck in this important area for several years. With the High-Tech Agenda of Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär, the current funding in the fields of AI and medicine in Lübeck is taking things to a new level. The goal of the High-Tech Agenda—to ensure Germany's competitiveness in key technology fields—is being implemented here in an exemplary and rapid manner.

This project will create a high-performance and secure AI computing center on the Lübeck campus, providing new impetus to research on the secure use of data for medical applications in the public research environment in Northern Germany. The center is expected to have a total computing power of over 3,000 petaflops, equivalent to the computing speed of large national high-performance computing centers, enabling the training of extremely complex AI models within a practical timeframe. The goal is to process highly sensitive medical data under the highest security standards and to systematically develop modern anonymization methods.

The state of Schleswig-Holstein is participating in the project by supporting and financing the operation of the infrastructure, thus enabling the participation of the state's universities and research institutions.

Digitalisation Minister Dirk Schrödter emphasizes the role of high-performance and secure AI infrastructures for the competitiveness of Schleswig-Holstein and the state's support in operating and providing the infrastructure.

AnoMed is scientifically managed by Prof. Dr. Esfandiar Mohammadi, head of the Privacy & Security working group at the Institute for IT Security and scientific director of the AnoMed competence cluster.

On the technical side, Christopher Blochwitz, head of the Scientific Computing group at the ITSC, and Helge Illig, head of the ITSC, are significantly involved in building the high-performance infrastructure. The project is being strategically supported by Prof. Dr. Helge Braun, President of the University of Lübeck.

With AnoMed, the University of Lübeck strengthens its profile areas in IT security, AI research and medicine, creating an infrastructure that combines cutting-edge research and social responsibility.
